CDFW Launches Digital California Fishing License App
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has introduced a new mobile application designed to streamline the way anglers carry and display their fishing licenses. Known as the CDFW License App, this innovative tool allows both residents and nonresidents to store their California sport fishing licenses and validations digitally on their mobile devices, eliminating the need for a physical license.
In addition to displaying licenses, the app provides access to a range of CDFW resources directly from users’ smartphones or tablets. Anglers can conveniently download and view hunting and fishing regulations booklets, check the Fish Planting Schedule, and access the Online License Sales and Services website.
Where To Download The CDFW Fishing License App
To get started, users can download the CDFW License App from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Alternatively, direct download links are available on CDFW’s License App web page, which also offers additional information and FAQs to assist users.
Assembly-member Jim Wood (D-Healdsburg), who championed the legislation enabling this digital initiative, expressed his enthusiasm: “The Department of Fish and Wildlife has made significant strides by moving to a 365 day fishing license. The launch of the CDFW License App marks an important step forward in enhancing convenience and accessibility for anglers across California.”
Originally introduced through Assembly Bill (AB) 817 in 2021, this initiative has garnered widespread support from the recreational fishing community and conservation organizations alike. The Coastal Conservation Association of California (CCA CAL) has praised the app, highlighting its long-term benefits for license holders and marine conservation efforts.
Nathaniel Arnold, acting chief of CDFW’s Law Enforcement Division, emphasized the app’s potential to simplify compliance: “Wildlife officers anticipate that the app will make it easier for anglers to present valid licenses during inspections, further promoting responsible fishing practices.”
What Will The App Include In The Future?
Looking ahead, the CDFW plans to expand the functionality of the California fishing license app to include hunting licenses and related validations by mid-2024, aligning with its broader efforts to reduce barriers and encourage participation in outdoor activities through its R3 initiative.
